We have a wealth of scientific knowledge. Our researchers are exceptionally gifted, highly skilled and intensely dedicated. We are living in a transformative age of breathtaking technological advancement. Yet we still lack life-saving treatments for countless diseases. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. He learned that the structure of traditional medical research can be slow and incremental, unsupportive of cross-disciplinary collaboration or creative approaches to investigation. He also brought the question to his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, who was already familiar with the challenges of medical research; together, the Adelsons knew they needed to take action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Drawing upon Dr. Adelson\u2019s and Dr. Dobkin\u2019s considerable medical and clinical knowledge and Mr. Adelson\u2019s extraordinary business acumen, the Adelsons began to calculate how biomedical research could progress more rapidly. In their minds, there was no time to waste. Every minute meant more lives saved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section id=\"banner-block_6080862d0d288\" class=\"block block--banner block_align_text_left block--has_background_image\">\n\t<style>#banner-block_6080862d0d288 {color: #ffffff;}#banner-block_6080862d0d288::before {background-color: #94b5c1;}<\/style>\t<div class=\"block__background_image \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adelsonfoundation.org\/AMRF\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/shape2.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\t<div class=\"block__content banner__content container \">\n\t\t<h2 class=\"block__title banner__title section_title  onview\">Context and Need<\/h2>\t\t<div class=\"block__text banner__text  onview banner__text--small\"><p style=\"text-align: center; max-width: 800px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><b>Medical research has made indelible contributions to humankind, yet there are conventions that inhibit the pace of progress:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Favoring short-term discovery over long-term goals:<\/strong> Many funding entities focus on incremental discoveries instead of an overarching goal of developing treatments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disease-specific funding:<\/strong> Many organizations only target and fund research on select diseases, incentivizing researchers to compartmentalize their efforts along disease-specific lines, as opposed to focusing on systemic biological pathways and mechanisms that are similar across diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Limited appetite for risk:<\/strong> Many funders prefer well-supported, low-risk proposals over exploratory, high-risk proposals, even though new perspectives may lead to significant advances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture of isolation:<\/strong> Researchers are often siloed. This limits their opportunity to draw upon a much wider range of expertise that might enhance and accelerate the discovery process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preference for specialization:<\/strong> For labs to be successful and attract funding, they must specialize, growing their knowledge and expertise in a specific area. The Adelsons quickly ascertained one critical factor to accelerating the pace of scientific discovery: Process. They recognized that reimagining the processes of research could influence scientific progress in ways that were previously unimaginable \u2013 and they decided to do something about it.
